Tour of the Human Body, Middle-High School

In this science club we are going to learn about ourselves! Our bodies contain a truly remarkable assortment of structures that each have an important job to do. When these parts work together as a coherent whole, they make us—wow! We will take an amazing journey through the human body. First we will learn about the very smallest living unit of our bodies, the cell. Then we will study how cells become specialized to perform their jobs in whatever part of the body they live in. Next we will meet the organs and watch the incredible teamwork that goes on between them. The process is sort of like a symphony where each instrument (like each organ of the body) is just as important as every other; when one does not sound just right, the music (like the human body) falls out of harmony. The human body is truly a masterpiece! Teens will put to use chemistry and physics by learning about the chemical reactions that occur in our bodies and how Newton's Laws of Motion are used to keep us alive.

Through hands-on projects and discussion, this science club will cover many of the systems of the body, helping club members see how these systems work together as teams to carry out all the functions of our bodies:

  1. Cells = Body’s smallest functional unit.
  2. Skeleton and muscle team = Framework of our body and how it moves around the planet.
  3. Circulatory and digestive system team = How atom and molecule delivery system works throughout the body.
  4. Circulatory and respiratory system team = Oxygen in, carbon dioxide out
  5. Circulatory, digestive, and respiratory system team = Three systems keeping us alive.
  6. Immune System = Warriors within that keep us healthy.
  7. Nervous system = Control center, both conscious and unconscious.
  8. Water world = How important water is in our bodies.
  9. Metabolism = How atoms and molecules work in our bodies.
